Many gals out there wonder “Can I wear my glasses as a gyaru, or do I need to opt for lenses?”. The short and sweet answer is: Yes, of course you can!

Let's take a look at some different styles of glasses and inspiration, interview some stellar gals who wear glasses, and share some pro tips and tricks!

🌺 INSPIRATION

Looks with glasses have also featured many, many times in gyaru magazines! May it be because they literally need them to see, need a break from lenses, or just as an accessory, many gyaru wear glasses! 👓

And while any style can work, there are definitely some styles that are more popular in the gyaru community and really add to the style! Some gals wear only their glasses without lenses, but it’s definitely most popular to pair with circle lenses underneath. We think both looks slay!

1) Big, cute, and preferably dark!

The most used frame is of course the big boxy frames. They are cute, they are enlarged around the eyes, and go so well with gyaru makeup. Whether it be square or rounded, this is definitely the most popular style.

2) Colourful frames!

Another noticeable trend has been red frames. More eye-catching perhaps, a real staple! But gals truly go for all different colours, and most of them like to make them really personal. Best to go for your favourite colour, we say!

3) Narrow and frameless.

Slimmer glasses can also often be seen, with both thick frames and thin, for a more mature look. Some even go for a half-frame, or no frame as well!

🌺 Real gyaru, real answers!

We interviewed three different gyaru about their glasses, and here is what they had to say!

🌺 What glasses are you currently using?

“They're wide frame black ones, kinda pointy but pretty big standard modern ones. I used to have these office siren like ones but my current ones have black and white cheetah on the sides and swirl print on the front with gems”.

🌺 How often do you wear your glasses with gyaru makeup?

“Literally everyday. I hate contacts cuz I don't like anything going in my eye and I've found them hard to use, and I’m extremely far sighted/myopia so I need them to function LOL. one day I'll probably switch to contacts but right now, no chance”.

🌺 Do you make any changes in your makeup routine to suit or work better for your glasses?

“My glasses make my eyes smaller than my normal glasses cuz of my makeup, so it actually gives me an advantage for gal looks. I hate that weird look that no contact gal make sometimes look, especially if you have brown eyes like me, but my glasses make my eyes more compact so when I put gal make on they look bigger. I do have to powder my nose extra well though because my glasses make the product slide off LOL. I use pressed and loose powder”.

🌺 Any tips or tricks for other young gals with glasses?

“I would recommend getting glasses that fit your face and make style. I usually do banba/tsuyome/dolly gal, and I find dark frames suit that makeup better. I would also recommend looking up glasses inspo for gals, most banba gals usually have dark square or tortoise shell frames, with exception for red frames too. if u do a more colorful intense style, I recommend a fun color like pink, orange, green or blue. if you do more soft styles, oval more delicate looking frames that are light pink white clear or fawn work. for more masculine styles, use narrow glasses or just get glasses from the men's section of your eyeglass store LOL. Also use Chinese makeup to learn eye contouring so even if you wear glasses, your eye make will still look gal”.

“I don’t wear glasses much with makeup bc it gets in the way of my lashes, but sometimes if I don’t have contacts in I’ll wear them! so not often,but anytime im not wearing makeup im always wearing them!

🌺 Do you make any changes in your makeup routine to suit or work better for your glasses?
"Yeah if im wearing glasses with makeup i tend to do less intense eye makeup and lighter base with smaller lashes!".

🌺 Any tips or tricks for other young gals with glasses?
"If you like to wear makeup with glasses, id suggest avoiding putting too much contour or foundation around your nose, since the glasses will take off the product there over time! keep the foundation light and little to no contour around the area it rubs on, and make sure you use as little powder as possible so if it rubs off, it doesn’t look too patchy!".

“Every time! I can't see without it, I wear my glasses even with non-prescription lenses!!”

🌺 Do you make any changes in your makeup routine to suit or work better for your glasses?

“The only changes I really make are putting more concealer where the nose pads lay on the glasses. Also, I point my lashes up at an angle when I put them on, since I stack them and they're very thick, if I put them on normally it would brush against my glasses all day LMAO”.

🌺 Any tips or tricks for other young gals with glasses?

“To continue wearing them and experiment with different shapes and colors!!!!! glasses are not only a necessity for a lot of us, but can also be an essential accessory. I'm working on getting a few different pairs to switch out for when my mood changes myself LOL”.

🌺 TIPS AND TRICKS WITH NETTI!

⭐ If your lashes are poking your glasses when you blink, and it annoys you and your eyes, glasses with nose pillows raise the glasses out and away from your eyes. I use boxy black frames most of the time, but I own one pair of narrow, thin framed glasses with nose pillows specifically to wear them with bigger eyelash makeup looks! Smaller/shorter/thinner lashes and tilting your lashes up is generally more comfortable with other frame styles.

⭐ Makeup being pulled off is a struggle! Sadly, when you are wearing glasses with makeup over a long period of time it is bound to happen no matter what, but here are some popular ways you can try out to combat it as well as you can!

Eyeshadow primer on the nose area before putting on makeup as normal.
Don’t use too much product! The more product the more it can “slide away”. Thin layer of moisturizer, thin layer of primer, thin layer of foundation; just in the nose bridge area! Then we powder well on top.
Powdering your nose extra well (using loose or pressed powder). Bake the nose with setting powder, and even put a little bit on the part of your frames that are going to rest on your nose bridge. Let the setting powder sit on from start until you finish the rest of your makeup!
A more unorthodox recommendation by cosplayers for heavy makeup is Ben Nye’s Final Seal. Blend into your makeup, and finish off with Ben Nye Setting Powder.
Pretty Britty Stickers, little stickers that you attach to the glasses!
Not wearing anything! It sounds scary, I know. But opting out from putting makeup on the area where your glasses rest on the nose bridge is sometimes the only solution. Blend around so it looks natural instead! I do this often, mostly because I don’t like my glasses “slipping”.

⭐Try different things! Try different techniques! Try different frames! It’s never one thing that fits all, you have to experiment to see what fits for you. Everyone has different skin types, different eyes, different faces. A makeup trick or a pair of frames that works for someone, might not work for you, and vice versa. Play around with your makeup and style, and have fun!
