Welcome to our (belated) July edition of GalPOP! - our monthly roundup of the best bits in gal news. We are in the thick of summer in the Northern hemisphere so we hope everyone is staying hydrated and having fun in the sun! 🌞
We were betting on an uneventful month for gal news but unfortunately the universe had other ideas last minute.

The lifestyle of a gal can be a short lived one - the expectation to graduate and assimilate to the rest of society is a social and practical pressure where toning down your appearance opens you up for more opportunities and for people to take you seriously.
To this day, gals still have a reputation for being airheaded (patriarchy amirite?) which is RUDE but recently, TV show Naninani Underground AMEBA gathered together a group of gals with some unexpected career paths that wouldn’t be obvious from how they looked, which is where the term ‘Gap’ comes into play.
This episode sees the presenters chatting with a model and plum alcohol craftswoman, a robotics-student and artist-turned-rare food seller, a monk, a fisherwoman and a roofer-all of who have kept their gal looks and have thrived!

The second season of reality TV show, Badly in Love, has been announced for August 4th on Netflix! BIL is Japan’s first dating show featuring a cast of 11 yankees (aka delinquents) and gals. Set in Okinawa is an absolutely incredible pop-themed set, apparently inside a marine academy, the cast is made up of rough-around-the-edges characters, including our fave ex egg model, Kiiripu, as they navigate love and delinquent drama together for 2 weeks.
We hope you tune in for the drammaaaaa!
Youtuber and reality TV queen, Yukipoyo has hard-launched her music career, dropping an MV for her new song, Te-Te Gyaru, with 'Te Te' being slang for something precious or wholesome.
Te-Te Gyaru is an homage to everything good about being a gal. Yukipoyo (real name Yuki Kimura) lists her favourite things about gal life, reeling off popular slang throughout the ages. It's short and sweet but super catchy and the MV is STUNNING.
The MV was shot by Push Japan, the same team responsible for Megan Thee Stallion and Yuki Chiba’s “Mamushi” video, which won Best Trending MV at the 2024 MTV music awards.
The best part is her listing a load of celebs she likes including Hailey and Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande and Tyla. So I guess they’re all canonical gyaru now.

Kanako Kawabata, one of the most influential Heisei-era EGG models and originator of the term ‘agepoyo’ is rumoured to have passed away at age 36. While no official news has been publicly released as of yet, details and speculations about her mental health in recent months and past crimes of her new husband began circulating Japanese social media on July 23rd, with a close friend seeming to confirm her passing on Instagram and others claiming to have connections to people who corroborate it. Without any official confirmation, we desperately hope that this is only a rumour. Rest in Peace, Kanako.
